How to Change Difficulty in Dungeons 2

How to change difficulty in Minecraft Dungeons II, what Easy, Normal and Hard change in damage and loot, and how threat level and milestones raise the challenge.

How do you change difficulty?

Open the game menu, go to the General tab and choose Difficulty, as described by GamerBlurb. The Minecraft Wiki says the difficulty can be changed at any time from the Difficulty Selection menu, so you do not have to start a new game.

We have not tested these steps ourselves. The numbers below come from the Minecraft Wiki page on Dungeons II difficulty, a community-edited wiki that quotes values from the game’s data files. We checked the page on 7 October 2026. It does not name a game build, so a patch could change the numbers.

What do the three difficulties change?

Difficulty Damage you deal Damage you take Loot
Easy x1.5 x0.5 No Special or Unique items
Normal x1 x1 Normal
Hard x0.6 x1.25 Normal

Each difficulty also shifts the threat level by a fixed amount: minus 1 on Easy, 0 on Normal and plus 1 on Hard. The game text describes a Very Low and a Very High setting too, but the wiki says no difficulty is defined for them. Unlike the first game, Dungeons II has no Apocalypse mode that we could find in the sources.

Easy is the only setting that costs you loot. If you want Unique weapons and gear, play on Normal or Hard.

What is threat level?

Threat level is a second difficulty that rises on its own. It starts at 1 and goes up by 1 every 5 character levels, to a maximum of 20. Each rise shows as a Milestone banner that tells you mobs are more challenging, item drops are better and uniques are more likely.

According to the wiki, higher threat does three things:

  • It makes rarer item rarities and higher effect tiers more likely on new drops.
  • It brings stronger enemy types: Royal Guards and Spider Jockeys from threat 2, Ravagers and Vanguards from threat 3, and soul corrupted mini-bosses from threat 4.
  • It lowers your damage and damage resistance.
Threat level Your damage Your damage resistance
1 100% 100%
5 77% 71%
10 56% 53%
15 43% 46%
20 36% 41%

This is why a character on the same weapon feels weaker as you level. The threat level used for drops is your threat level plus the difficulty shift above.

What does it do to loot?

Chance of each rarity on a drop, by threat level. Chests and bosses change these odds, so treat them as the base case.

Threat Common Rare Special Unique
1 76.9% 23.1% 0% 0%
4 54.7% 35.2% 9.4% 0.8%
8 37.6% 37.6% 21.1% 3.8%
12 36.0% 28.8% 28.8% 6.5%
15 and above 40.0% 20.0% 32.0% 8.0%

Unique items cannot drop below threat 4. The wiki also lists the odds for the strength of each random effect on an item. At threat 2 and below every effect is tier I. At threat 20 an effect is tier II or tier III with equal chance. Each item remembers the threat level it was made at, so an old piece of gear can still roll tier I effects when you re-roll it at the Blacksmith.

Does a harder setting make enemies tougher?

Hard changes the damage numbers rather than enemy health in the wiki’s data: you deal 40% less and take 25% more. If you want enemy health figures, see the bosses guide, which lists boss and mini-boss health read from the game files.

Does difficulty affect achievements?

Difficulty does not affect trophies on PlayStation 5, according to the PowerPyx trophy guide, which says everything can be done on Easy. See our achievements guide.

For how levels and points work, see the max level guide. For gear that helps on Hard, see the best builds guide.
